POSITION:                 Janitorial Cleaner-Back of House

LOCATION:               Florence SC Battery Recycle Center REPORTS TO:           Shift Supervisor

Position Summary: Position is responsible for general cleaning of the production area and removal of lead materials  in the battery recycle facility


Position Responsibilities: Include any or all of the following duties. Other duties may be assigned by supervisor. These responsibilities are subject to change.

  • Cleaning surfaces within the production area using damp mops, damp rags, vacuums, and other tools to wipe down walls, staircases, stair wells, baseboards, equipment, etc. This is a continuous activity.
  • Identify, remove, manually transport, or dispose of lead materials in the production area using prescribed cleaning procedures.
  • Utilize/operate various cleaning equipment and tools while cleaning and removing lead materials, such as a vacuum, pressure washer, squeegee, mop, or shovel.
  • May be cross trained to operate a floor scrubber to assist with cleaning the production floors.
  • Perform other duties that may be necessary as assigned by the supervisor or manager.

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must have either a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prefer a minimum of 6 months prior experience in cleaning/janitorial work within an industrial environment. However, not a requirement.
  • Prefer prior experience in the operation and use of cleaning tools and equipment
  • Must be able to follow directions and adhere to all required safety rules and practices
  • Must be flexible/adaptable to change as the position may have to rotate between different departments in the production area.


Physical Demands: The physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to continually stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with arms and hands. The employee is required to stoop, bend, kneel, or crouch. The employee will also exert effort when using vacuums, shovels, squeegees, or mops while cleaning. The employee must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Since the position works with a hazardous material (lead), the employee must be able to wear a full-face respirator and other PPE such as steel toed boots.


Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here represent those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee may be exposed to lead while working in a hot, dirty environment. Use of required PPE is a must while in the work area. Required PPE includes full-face respirator, uniform, gloves, and steel toed boots. Showering and changing in to and out of work clothes is necessary to avoid lead contamination. The employee is required to participate in periodic testing to monitor employee lead levels. The position normally works 12 hour shifts (day or night based on assignment), alternating between 3 and 4 day workweeks (36/48 hour weeks).
